Using Earth as a laboratory to shape the future of space exploration
Earth-X (Earth Analogs for Research and Testing of Habitats and Exploration) is a research, experimentation, and technology development program led by Corporación Científica Laguna (CorpoLaguna) that uses Earth's extreme environments as natural laboratories to study other worlds and advance the scientific and technological capabilities required for their future exploration.
Our planet hosts volcanoes, glaciers, deserts, hydrothermal systems, and other extreme environments that share geological, geochemical, and environmental characteristics with conditions observed or inferred elsewhere in the Solar System. These environments, known as terrestrial planetary analogs, provide unique opportunities to investigate planetary processes, explore the limits of habitability, and test strategies, instruments, and technologies before deploying them beyond Earth.
Earth-X brings together planetary geology, astrobiology, geomicrobiology, extreme-environment research, and space technology around three fundamental activities: research, experimentation, and testing.
Through scientific expeditions, planetary analog characterization, experimentation, technology development, and international collaboration, we seek to understand how terrestrial environments can help answer fundamental questions about the evolution and habitability of other worlds while providing real-world settings in which to prepare for their exploration.
From planetary analogs to exploration
Over the past several years, researchers associated with CorpoLaguna have conducted scientific studies in some of Earth's most remarkable extreme environments, including volcanic systems and other natural settings in Colombia, Antarctica, Greece, and Italy, assessing their potential as terrestrial analogs for environments on Mars and the Moon.
This scientific experience provides the foundation for Earth-X.
The program is now moving toward its next stage: transforming planetary analog environments into platforms for developing, testing, and validating technologies, systems, and operational strategies for planetary exploration.
This vision encompasses scientific field operations, instrumentation, environmental monitoring, resource management, human and robotic exploration, and technologies designed to support future missions to the Moon and Mars.
