BIONOVA

Biosciences and Biotechnology for a Sustainable Future.

BIONOVA is a scientific program of CorpoLaguna’s NOVA Research Center, operating under the Scientific Division. It focuses on fundamental and applied research in biological sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, and biological processes of scientific, environmental, and technological relevance.
We integrate the study of biodiversity, microorganisms, their adaptation mechanisms, and metabolic capabilities with the development of innovative solutions for environmental sustainability, responsible production, sustainable utilization of biological resources, and the transformation of production processes.

Our Research Areas
We explore the diversity and potential of biological systems to advance scientific knowledge and develop innovative solutions.

Microbiology and Extreme Environments
Research on the diversity, physiology, metabolism, and adaptation mechanisms of microorganisms inhabiting extreme environments, including volcanic, polar, and hydrothermal ecosystems, as well as other environments characterized by distinctive physicochemical conditions. We investigate their scientific and biotechnological potential, along with their applications in environmental and industrial processes and technological innovation.

Environmental Biotechnology and Bioremediation
Research and development of strategies based on microorganisms, plants, and biological processes for the transformation, immobilization, or removal of contaminants from soils, water, and other environmental systems. This includes investigating biotechnological approaches to restoring environments affected by industrial, mining, and agricultural activities.

Agricultural Biotechnology and Plant Growth Promotion
Research on microorganisms and biological processes that enhance plant development, nutrient availability, stress tolerance, and agricultural productivity. We investigate biological inputs, plant growth-promoting microorganisms, and biotechnological strategies aimed at achieving more sustainable agricultural production.

Energy Biotechnology and Bioeconomy
Research on metabolic processes and biological systems with potential applications in energy production, organic waste valorization, and the conversion of biomass into products of technological and industrial interest. We explore alternatives that support the energy transition, the circular economy, and the development of sustainable production processes.

Biodiversity, Ecology, and Conservation
Research on biological diversity, ecological interactions, and ecosystem functioning, with an emphasis on advancing scientific knowledge to support biodiversity conservation, the sustainable management of biological resources, and the assessment of environmental changes.

Molecular Biology and Adaptation Mechanisms
Investigation of the cellular, physiological, genetic, and molecular processes that enable organisms to respond to different environmental conditions. This research area seeks to understand the mechanisms underlying biological adaptation and identify processes, molecules, and characteristics with potential applications in scientific research and biotechnology.

Scientific and Technological Capabilities
We integrate biological, microbiological, and biotechnological methodologies to conduct research and develop applied solutions.

Our scientific and technological capabilities include:
- Design and implementation of biological and microbiological research in natural and experimental environments.
- Sampling and characterization of microbial communities and biological materials.
- Isolation, cultivation, and physiological characterization of microorganisms.
- Assessment of microbial tolerance to extreme environmental conditions and specific substances of interest.
- Investigation of metabolic processes and biological adaptation mechanisms, including experimental evaluation of microorganisms for potential biotechnological applications.
- Research on the bioremediation of contaminated soils, water, and other materials.
- Investigation of plant growth-promoting microorganisms and their agricultural applications.
- Research on biological processes for biomass valorization and energy generation.
- Ecological characterization and assessment of biological systems.
- Development and implementation of research, technological development, and innovation projects.
